Which Countries Require Travel Insurance for Visitors?

Travel in 2020 decreased dramatically due to COVID-19, but now, at the start of the new year, many countries have found ways to adapt. Many countries around the world have adopted new requirements for travelers in order to maintain the safety of tourists and their citizens. Some requirements include a negative COVID-19 test, a two-week quarantine once in the country, or a travel visa. However, there is one requirement that many may be unaware of-- travel medical insurance. 

In some countries, the requirement for travel medical insurance is general coverage and in others, it must be COVID-19-related coverage. If you are hoping to travel soon, and do so safely, but are feeling overwhelmed by all the new travel requirements here is a list of all the countries requiring travel medical insurance.

List of countries that require travel insurance for entry:

Anguilla

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Antarctica

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Brazil

Requires proof of travel health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Bahamas

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

The British Virgin Islands

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Cambodia

Travelers are required to buy local health insurance for COVID-19. 

Columbia

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Costa Rica

Requires proof of health insurance which covers up to $50,000 in COVID-19 medical expenses and $2,000 in quarantine room and board expenses.

Cuba

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Dubai 

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Ecuador

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Egypt

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Georgia

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Iran

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Japan

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers.

Lebanon

Travel medical insurance is required for tourists including full coverage for COVID-19 related medical expenses. 

New Caledonia

Travel medical insurance is required for travelers and must cover treatment, hospital, and repatriation expenses. 

Oman

Travel medical insurance for at least a month is required for travelers.

Pakistan

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Panama

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the cost of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

Qatar

Travel medical insurance is required for visitors.

Russia

Travel medical insurance is required to obtain a travel visa. 

Rwanda

Sufficient travel health insurance is required to enter the country. 

Schengen Countries

International travel medical insurance is a requirement for Schengen travel. Anyone trying to obtain a travel visa who is not a citizen of the US or a European country.

Turkey

Turks and Caicos

Requires proof of health insurance which covers the healthcare costs of all medical expenses related to COVID-19.

United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Travel medical insurance is required to obtain a travel visa, however, US citizens can travel visa-free-- unless they plan on staying longer than one month. 

Abu Dhabi

Dubai *minimum of $100,000 in medical coverage

Vietnam

Travel medical insurance is required for visitors and they are responsible for all COVID-19-related costs.

Traveling during a pandemic is not easy and not necessarily safe, but if it must be done it is best to be informed and ensure you are covered. It is important to note that many of these countries require more than travel medical insurance, and the requirements for all of these countries are subject to change.
